Description
Summary: A privately owned, local financial planning firm in Fort Collins is seeking an experienced Seasonal Tax Preparer to partner with us as an Independent Contractor (1099) for the 2026 tax season. This is a project-based role requiring expert-level knowledge in Tax Compliance and Tax Preparation.
Scope of Work (30–40 Hours Per Week):
- Tax Preparation Focus: Prepare and accurately review complex Federal and State tax returns, including S-Corporations (Form 1120-S), Trusts (Form 1041), and tax situations involving minor dependents.
- Review & Sign-Off: The contractor's role is limited to preparation. The firm's Principal will be responsible for the final review and signing of all returns.
- Problem-Solving & Data Analysis: Utilize analytical skills to resolve complex tax issues and apply a strong understanding of accounting and financial statement management.
- Independent Work: Manage deadlines and complete work with a high degree of independence, coordinating with the firm's CPA/EA for document processing.
- Tax Law Proficiency: Maintain and apply current proficiency in tax laws and regulations.
- Workload Note: The contractor will be expected to work in a tax season environment, in which some weeks may be less than 40 hours a week and some slightly more, depending on the ebb and flow of the work and client needs.
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation preferred (higher pay applies).
- Proven proficiency with Drake Tax Software is highly preferred.
- 1099 Status: The contractor must be set up to manage all required self-employment taxes, insurance, and professional fees.
Desirable Skills:
- Familiarity with preparing other small business entity returns (e.g., Schedule C/E, Form 1065) is a plus.
